Upholstery cleaning in Romford – safe for delicate fabrics - Cleaning Romford

Upholstery Cleaning in Romford (RM)

Sofas take the brunt of family life: tea spills, a dog that sleeps on the arm, and that grey sheen where everyone always sits. Our upholstery cleaning in Romford lifts the grime that’s worked into the fabric, freshens tired cushions and tackles marks using a method matched to your furniture’s fibres, for homes, rentals and businesses across RM. Send us a couple of photos and the care label details, or give us a ring, and we’ll come back with a free, no-obligation quote.

What we clean and what happens to each piece

We clean fabric sofas, corner units, armchairs, footstools, dining chair seats, headboards and fabric-covered office and reception seating. On request we also clean scatter cushions and fixed seat and back cushions.

Every job follows the same core routine, adjusted to the fabric:

  1. Inspect and check the label. We look for the cleaning code, old water marks, loose seams, worn patches and any stains you’ve already tried to treat.
  2. Dry vacuum thoroughly. We get into the crevices, under the cushions and along the piping, where crumbs, grit and pet hair collect. Skipping this step turns dust into mud once moisture goes on.
  3. Test patch. We try the chosen product somewhere hidden, such as the back of a skirt or under a cushion, to check for colour run and shrinkage.
  4. Pre-treat and agitate. We apply a solution suited to the fibre and work it in gently by hand or with a soft brush to loosen body oils and soiling on the arms and headrests.
  5. Clean and extract. Most fabrics get a controlled hot water extraction rinse. Delicate fibres get a low-moisture method instead.
  6. Groom and set to dry. We brush the pile back into line, so velvet and chenille don’t dry patchy, and leave the furniture positioned to air.

Matching the method to the fabric

The wrong product is how a sofa ends up with brown rings or a shrunken cushion cover. Before we quote, we’ll ask what your furniture is made of. The care label code tells us a lot:

  • W: water-based cleaning is suitable. Most cotton blends, polyester and microfibre fall here.
  • S: solvent or dry cleaning only. Water can leave rings or cause shrinkage.
  • W/S: either method, chosen according to the condition.
  • X: vacuum only. We’ll be honest if a piece shouldn’t be wet-cleaned at all.

Viscose, silk blends, some linens and older velvets need the most care, because they can brown or watermark if they get too wet. If there’s no label, we test first and go gently. We’ll tell you before we start if we think the risk outweighs the benefit.

Leather is a different job. We can clean and condition finished leather, but cleaning won’t restore faded colour, cracks or scuffed finishes.

Pet hair, odours and stains: what we can realistically do

We tackle pet hair first with rubber-bristled tools and a strong vacuum. Hair weaves into fabric, and a wet clean on top of it just mats it down.

Everyday odours from pets, cooking and smoke usually improve a lot after extraction, because the cause sits in the fabric surface. Urine is harder. If it has soaked through into the foam, we can treat the fabric and reduce the smell, but some of the source may stay in the cushion inner. We’ll say so at the start rather than after the visit.

On stains, we always make a proper attempt. We don’t promise removal. A lot depends on:

  • What it is. Food, drink and general soiling often shift well. Dye, ink, nail varnish, red wine left for weeks and fake tan are harder.
  • How old it is. Older stains are more likely to have set.
  • What’s already been tried. Hot water, washing-up liquid and supermarket sprays can set a mark or leave residue that attracts dirt. Tell us what you’ve used.

How long does upholstery take to dry?

Usually a few hours, and often longer for thick cushions or heavier fabrics. Drying time depends on fabric type, cushion density, the weather and how much air is moving through the room. Low-moisture methods dry faster than full extraction.

To help it along:

  • Open a window or put the heating on low.
  • Keep pets and children off until the fabric feels dry right through, not just on the surface.
  • Leave cushions standing as we’ve placed them.
  • Avoid putting dark throws or newspapers on damp fabric, because dye can transfer.

If you’re having carpets done too, book them together. We’ll plan the order so your furniture isn’t going back onto a damp floor. Find out more about our carpet cleaning service.

How booking works

  1. Send details. Tell us how many pieces, the seat count, the fabric if you know it, and any stains, pets or odour problems. Photos of the furniture and the care labels help us quote accurately.
  2. Agreed scope and quote. We confirm what’s being cleaned, the method, any extras and the price before we arrive.
  3. Access. We agree an arrival window and who’ll let us in, or arrange key collection if you’re out.
  4. The clean. We bring all equipment and products. Please clear loose items off the furniture and make space around it.
  5. Final check. We go over each piece against the agreed list with you, or send an update if you’re not home. If something in scope has been missed, contact us promptly and we’ll arrange to put it right. We’ll confirm the details of this when you book.

What changes the price

Every quote is based on the actual job, not a one-size rate. The main factors are:

  • Number and size of pieces: a two-seater against a large corner unit with a chaise.
  • Fabric type: delicate fibres take longer and need different products.
  • Condition: heavy soiling, pet hair, odour treatment or multiple stains add time.
  • Removable vs fixed cushions, and any extra scatter cushions.
  • Access and parking: upper-floor flats without a lift and limited parking both affect the visit.
  • Combined jobs: adding carpets, rugs or mattresses on the same visit is usually more efficient.

You’ll find more on how we quote on our pricing page. The price is agreed upfront before any work begins.

Upholstery cleaning for Romford homes, landlords and businesses

Family homes. Pets, small children and allergies are worth mentioning when you book. If you’d prefer gentler products, eco-friendly options are available, and we’ll check they suit your fabric first. We’ll also ask you to keep pets in another room while we work and while the furniture dries.

Tenancies. Furnished lets often have a sofa noted on the inventory. Upholstery can be added to an end of tenancy clean, but book it early in the schedule so the fabric is dry before the check-out. Cleaning can improve the appearance of furniture, but it can’t fix wear, burns or fading.

Offices, waiting rooms and hospitality. Reception chairs and booth seating pick up body oils and food marks quickly. We schedule around your opening hours where we can, so seats have time to dry before customers arrive.

Parking. Some streets in the town centre and around the station have restrictions. Let us know if you’ve got a driveway or a visitor permit, because our equipment is heavy and we need to park reasonably close. We work across all RM postcodes.

What customers in Romford say

“Our cream sofa had three years of kids and a Labrador on it. The arms came up far lighter than I expected. They were upfront that one old felt-tip mark might not shift, and it’s faded but still faintly there. Fair enough.” Hannah R., Gidea Park, sofa cleaning

“Velvet armchair from my nan. I was nervous about watermarks, so they tested underneath first and used a drier method. The pile looks even again.” Marcus T., Harold Wood, upholstery cleaning

“Had the sofa and both bedroom mattresses done before the inventory check on our flat. Keys were left with the neighbour and it all went smoothly.” Aisha K., Collier Row, upholstery and mattress cleaning

“Twelve reception chairs done before opening. They were dry by mid-morning.” Daniel O., Romford town centre, commercial upholstery

Upholstery cleaning FAQs

Can you remove pet smells from a sofa?

Usually we can reduce them a lot. Surface odours from pets respond well to cleaning and extraction. Urine that has reached the foam may need the cushion inner replaced to get rid of it completely, and we’ll tell you if we think that’s the case.

Is it safe for delicate fabrics?

Yes, as long as we use the right method. We check the care code, test a hidden area and use low-moisture cleaning on fibres such as viscose and silk blends. If a piece is marked vacuum only, we won’t wet-clean it.

Should I take the cushion covers off and wash them?

No, not unless the label says they’re machine washable. Covers can shrink and then won’t fit back on, or end up a different shade from the rest of the sofa. We clean them in place.

How long before we can sit on it?

Wait until it feels dry all the way through. That’s usually a few hours, and longer for thick cushions or in cold, damp weather. Good airflow speeds things up.

Can you clean a mattress at the same time?

Yes. Many customers combine the two. See our mattress cleaning service for what’s involved.

Do I need to be home?

No. Plenty of customers leave a key or arrange access with a neighbour or concierge. We’ll agree how that works before the visit.

Will cleaning fix fading or worn fabric?

No. Cleaning removes dirt, which often brightens fabric, but it can’t restore sun-faded colour, thinning fibres, pilling or sagging cushions. That needs a reupholsterer.
